Red Cross caseworkers reach out with assistance on Easter Sunday
Call center operators offer information and registration
SMITHFIELD, NC April 23, 2011 - Red Cross volunteers and workers are continuing their disaster relief work on Easter Sunday, reaching out to North Carolinians affected by last week's tornadoes.
Client services teams are moving through affected neighborhoods and conducting casework to assess client needs and offer assistance and referrals where appropriate.
People who suffered major damage and have not been visited by a caseworker should call 1-800-REDCROSS (1-800-733-2767) to speak with a caseworker. Clients seeking assistance are also urged to register with FEMA by calling 1-800-621-FEMA(3362).
The Red Cross also continues to provide services and casework at three shelters that remain open at these locations:

Since the storms hit last Saturday, more than 1150 overnight stays in Red Cross shelters have been recorded and Red Cross workers have served more than 35,000 meals and 31,000 snacks.
Approximately 60 Red Cross response vehicles continue to travel the affected areas providing meals and performing bulk distribution of water, clean-up supplies, rakes, shovels and more. A list of mobile feeding routes and fixed feeding sites follows at the end of this release. Red Cross operations center needs community volunteers
The Red Cross has openings for spontaneous community volunteers to help with the ongoing relief effort. Volunteers will report to the operations headquarters in Smithfield and may be asked to help with a variety of duties ranging from data entry to assisting with bulk distribution. If you are interested, please call 517-205-3141 between 8 a.m. and 7 p.m. for more information. Please call first; do not head directly to a Red Cross location.

* Cumberland County - Mobile feeding in an approximately 5-square-mile zone in the Fort Bragg area
* Fixed feeding site at the Westover Recreation Center in Fayetteville
* Fixed feeding site at the Dunn Recreation Center in Dunn
* Wake County - Mobile feeding in 7 contiguous zones covering approximately 21 square miles
* Johnston County - Mobile feeding in Four Oaks and Micro
* Lee County - Fixed feeding site at the K-mart on South Horner Street in Sanford
* Bertie and Hertford Counties - Mobile feeding along a line that approximately follows Avery Perry School Road out of Bertie County and into Hertford County.
