RALEIGH, N.C., October 31, 2011 – Triangle Red Cross Volunteer Alex Alexis will serve as part of the Jimmy and Rosalyn Carter Work Project in Léogâne, Haiti. The Carter Work Project, which will take place November 5 – November 12, is a Habitat for Humanity Project in which volunteers will construct 100 homes for impoverished Haitian families displaced by the January 2010 earthquake. Alex will be one of approximately 400 volunteers taking part in this exceptional project, in which volunteers will experience life with “primitive” living conditions, including limited running water and electricity while residing in a tent. Volunteers will work 9-hour days in the humid Haitian weather and will be unable to even take sight-seeing trips. This elite volunteer team must be prepared to be mentally, emotionally and physically exhausted throughout their mission; although the experience will push them to their limits, volunteers know that helping others get back on their feet is worth their temporary discomfort.

Alex, a seasoned Red Cross volunteer, will be making his second Disaster Relief trip to Haiti since the 2010 earthquake with his participation in the Carter Work Project. He began his Red Cross affiliation with the Haiti Red Cross in 1977. As a volunteer, Alex responded by motorcycle to emergencies of all kinds around his home town of Port au Prince, Haiti. Now living in the Triangle, Alex has continued his Red Cross volunteer work with the American Red Cross. Alex’s first trip back to Haiti with the Red Cross was as an interpreter aboard the USNS Comfort Naval Hospital Ship in 2010; for this second opportunity, he is one of only ten American Red Cross volunteers with the qualifications (such as language skills) to join the Carter Project, and the only volunteer in the Triangle with the distinction.
