RED CROSS RELIEF OPERATION HEADQUARTERS IN WILMINGTON
WILMINGTON NC, October 3, 2010 – The American Red Cross has established a disaster relief operation headquarters site in the former Haverty’s storefront at 3709 Oleander Drive in Wilmington to support the Red Cross response to flooding in North Carolina. Client assistance is not available at this location. Area residents in need of help with immediate disaster-caused emergency needs should contact their local Red Cross chapter.
In addition to supporting the Cape Fear Chapter’s response in Brunswick, Columbus, Duplin, New Hanover, and Pender counties, Red Cross relief operation personnel are mobilizing human and material resources to provide mass care services (feeding, sheltering, and bulk distribution) to all affected communities throughout the state.
More than a hundred trained Red Cross disaster relief personnel are currently assigned to the flood relief operation. This number includes both local and visiting staff and volunteers.
Floods are among the most frequent and costly natural disasters in terms of human hardship and economic loss. Most communities in the United States experience some kind of flooding. American Red Cross disaster relief services are paid for through the generous support of corporations, foundations and individuals. Every year the Red Cross spends an average of $450 million on our Disaster Services program. That includes the cost of the direct services to our clients – feeding, sheltering and emotional support – for the nearly 70,000 disasters we respond to every year, from house fires to hurricanes. It also includes the costs to maintain those things that help us provide assistance to people in need. We have warehouses, disaster response vehicles, volunteers, call centers, computer systems and staff ready to respond year round. If we didn’t maintain these resources 24/7, we couldn’t get help to people in a timely fashion.
The American Red Cross is doing everything we can to ensure that when anyone is affected by disaster, we are there. We need your help to continue to providing the level of service that people need and rightfully expect from us— a safe and dry place to stay, food, emotional support and many other kinds of assistance—whenever and wherever disaster strikes. Any donation is deeply appreciated and will greatly help those affected by disaster.
You can help people affected by disasters like floods, as well as countless crises at home and around the world, by making a donation to support American Red Cross Disaster Relief Program. Your gift enables the Red Cross to prepare for emergencies and provide shelter, food, emotional support and other assistance in response to disasters. Visit www.redcross.org or call 1-800-RED-CROSS. Contributions may also be sent to your local American Red Cross.
