RALEIGH, NC, JANUARY 13, 2012 – Twenty Triangle area high school students are raising money and awareness for the American Red Cross in their communities as part of the 2012 High School Heroes program funded by The Grainger Foundation. High School Heroes is a leadership program that awards seven scholarships to area teens for their efforts on behalf of the Triangle Area Red Cross. The program kicks off Saturday, Jan. 14, 2012, and runs through March. March is Red Cross Month.
The top three students raising the most money will earn a scholarship of $5000, $2000 and $1000, respectively. In addition, four other students demonstrating outstanding results each will be awarded $500 scholarships for their efforts. This year, 22 students from Wake, Orange, Chatham, Johnston, and Lee Counties were selected to take part in the program. In 2011, participating students raised nearly $40,000 in the program formerly known as the Queen of Hearts Community Awareness Program.
While participating in the program, students design and execute their own fund-raising and awareness campaigns, which are usually small social events. Participants are partnered with a mentor who previously completed the program and with a successful community business leader to help the students fully develop their campaigns as well as network with other Red Cross supporters.
Students participating in the program will develop leadership, time management, and networking skills. While doing so, the students give back to their community and learn the importance of helping those in need. All donations raised by participants are used to fulfill the longstanding, life-saving mission of the Red Cross: to provide relief to victims of disasters and help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies.
The High School Heroes scholarship winners will be announced and all student participants will be honored at a dinner on Friday, April 13, 2012, at One Eleven Place in Cary, NC.
