Red Cross Continues Helping Eastern NC Families Devastated by Floods
Washington, NC October 11, 2010 – Nearly two weeks after the storm, Red Cross continues to provide stability and hope for families throughout Eastern North Carolina. Red Cross volunteers will continue mobile outreach into flood-affected areas. Teams of Red Cross caseworkers will connect one-on-one with people in need to provide assistance with food, clothing and other emergency needs. Since the flooding began, more than 250 Red Cross volunteers have been working to support the disaster-caused needs of families.
To date, the Red Cross has provided 167 overnight stays, served 3,577 meals and 8,386 snacks, and distributed 899 clean-up kits and 1453 bulk items (e.g. garbage bags, gloves, bleach). The Red Cross opened twenty-one shelters across eastern North Carolina due to the flooding. All shelters are now closed.
Red Cross volunteers throughout the affected areas are also helping with emergency medical needs and providing emotional support and counseling. The Red Cross is working with local partners to connect those in need with available community resources.
“Our volunteers are ready to meet with people whose homes sustained major damage from the flooding to determine how the Red Cross can assist them in rebuilding their lives,” says Lynwood Roberson, Regional Executive Director of the Frederick E. Turnage Chapter of the American Red Cross. All Red Cross disaster relief is completely free to the recipients. If your home suffered major damage from the floods, please contact your local Red Cross chapter.
