Community Service with Style
Triangle Red Cross gears up for the 4th Annual Queen of Hearts Community Awareness Program
RALEIGH, October 14, 2010 – It’s not often that a young lady in high school can compete for a scholarship and a tiara, while also earning community service hours. Candidates of the 2011 Queen of Hearts Community Awareness Program can do just that. While participating in the program, candidates design and execute their own awareness campaigns to benefit the Triangle Red Cross, thus earning community service hours, while competing for a scholarship up to $1,000.
Applications for the Queen of Hearts Community Awareness Program are accepted from young ladies grades 10 to 12 in Wake, Chatham, Franklin, Johnston, Lee and Warren Counties. Applications can be found online at www.TriangleRedCross.org/scholarship and are due Friday, November 19, 2010.
Candidates participating in the program build leadership, time management, and networking skills. While doing so, these young ladies also give back to our community and learn the importance of helping those in need. All donations raised by participants are used to fulfill the longstanding, life-saving mission of the Red Cross: to provide relief to victims of disasters and help people prevent, prepare for, and respond to emergencies. On March 11, 2011, all candidates will be honored during a special ceremony at Marbles Museum, where the winner of the scholarship will be crowned Ms. Queen of Hearts 2011.
Last year, nineteen candidates from four counties raised nearly $35,000 for local disaster relief efforts. To build on last year’s successful program, this year’s candidates will gain extra experience via the new Queen of Hearts Mentor Program. Mentors include previous program participants and successful business women who are active philanthropists in Wake County. This new portion of the program is designed to help candidates fully develop their campaigns as well as network with other Red Cross supporters.
Mentors are available for interviews upon request.
